Alkagesta has become one of Malta’s most active oil cargo traders, according to sources familiar with current investigations.
The company, based in Malta, is currently renting the Evos oil bunkering facility near the Freeport, as well as other facilities in Delimara and elsewhere on the island.
Alkagesta faces serious accusations of purchasing smuggled Libyan oil and reselling it with falsified certificates. Investigators say the company relies heavily on Russian-speaking employees in its Malta offices to manage client communications and operations.
The practice of acquiring smuggled Libyan oil in Maltese waters and at Hurd’s Bank, then marketing it with fake documentation, has already been highlighted in a United Nations Security Council investigation.
While other major oil cargo traders in Malta — such as Macquarie Commodities, Peninsula Petroleum, and BB Energy — have the capacity to handle large-scale sales, sources suggest Alkagesta is rapidly outpacing them in activity and influence.
